THE BRIEF

Defining Products commissioned us to create a visionary brand film that would showcase their unique business model through the lens of their collaboration with artisan tile brand Smink Things. Our challenge was to craft a cinematic narrative that would position Defining Products as the ultimate creative-commercial hybrid in the retail industry—a boutique consultancy with the capabilities of a major agency but the soul and adaptability of a trusted partner.


We set out to produce a boundary-pushing film that would:

  • Capture Creative Alchemy — Document the delicate dance between artistic vision and commercial viability that defines the Defining Products methodology, following a real product journey from concept sketches to retail placement

  • Showcase Invisible Expertise — Reveal the behind-the-scenes strategic thinking that transforms good design into successful products, highlighting how Defining Products bridges knowledge gaps without overshadowing their clients

  • Demonstrate Adaptive Partnership — Illustrate how Defining Products tailors their approach to each client's unique needs, creating a bespoke support structure that allows creative entrepreneurs to focus on what only they can do

  • Elevate Brand Perception — Create a film with such distinctive artistic merit that it becomes a talking point in itself, positioning Defining Products as not just a service provider but a creative force worthy of press attention and industry awards

  • Span Five Business Verticals — Subtly showcase Defining Products' expertise across their core service areas: designer support, manufacturing optimisation, retail development, licensing/brand extension, and product development

 

 

The production would take viewers on a journey from the Smink Things studio in London to their manufacturing facility in Portugal, capturing intimate creative moments alongside technical production processes. The resulting film needed to feel like it was made by Defining Products rather than simply about them—embodying their cosmopolitan sensibility, trend-forward thinking, and seamless balance of creativity with commercial acumen.
